Minister says it's myth that Vancouver coast guard cuts would put lives at risk

   VANCOUVER - Federal Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield is defending his government's funding cuts to the Canadian Coast Guard and says anyone who claims the changes endanger lives in Vancouver is propagating false information.

   The minister made the remarks while announcing a $100,000 funding boost to the Royal Marine Search and Rescue Auxiliary.

   The money is meant to strengthen the volunteer organization's search and rescue capabilities.

   There's been an outcry from the public and local politicians since the federal government announced its cuts would mean the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station in Vancouver.

   New Democrat MP Peter Julian said the additional funding to the volunteer organization is irresponsible and meant to off load search and rescue costs to municipalities who contribute resources to the auxiliary.

   Ashfield said the closure of the station in no way endangers people using Vancouver-area waters and accusations to the contrary are simply a myth.
