Petition from ACORN Canada in support of fair remittance rates for bank transfers / Pétition d’ACORN Canada pour des frais de transferts bancaires équitables

Please sign ACORN Canada’s petition!

ACORN Canada is asking for individual and organizational support for ACORN Canada's Remittance Justice Campaign, demanding that the fees for remitting money out of Canada through banks and money transfer organizations is capped at 5% of money sent. The current fee structure is predatory, often representing 15% of the remittance and sometimes as high as 25-30%. It has been estimated by the World Bank that Banks and Money Transfer Organizations take more than $44 billion every year in fees; money that would have likely gone to some of the worlds’ poorest families. That is the equivalent of at least 2 entire elementary schools and approximately 24 classrooms. We lose these students one by one but the numbers do add up. These students have complicated life stories and high needs. Many come from poverty and have trouble getting their basic needs met.
