NEWS ~ NEW DEMOCRATS CLAIM VICTORY ON FUNDING FOR WORLD POLICE AND FIRE GAMES

Julian and Siksay’s fight for fairness for police and firefighters finally pays off

OTTAWA – New Democrat Peter Julian (Burnaby-New Westminster) and Bill Siksay’s (Burnaby-Douglas) two year battle to properly fund this summer’s Police and Fire Games in Burnaby has ended in victory.

On Tuesday in the House of Commons, Secretary of State for Western Economic Diversification Lynne Yelich announced that the Conservative government would provide $2.3 million for the Burnaby Police and Fire Games this July and August.

Since early 2006, Julian and Siksay have been calling on the government to equal the funding the government has given to pervious host cities for these Games. After numerous questions, letters to Ministers, a motion in the House and interviews in the press, the government has now agreed.

“After two and half years of trying to get the Harper government to properly fund these funds games I am glad they finally came around to seeing how important they are to our community,” said Julian. Siksay agreed saying “Not only do they show support to our police, firefighters and border guards, they also celebrate Burnaby and Metro Vancouver.”
