NEWS ~ MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT PETER JULIAN AND BILL SIKSAY BELIEVE TEAM EFFORT HELPED SECURE FUNDING FOR THE 2009 WORLD POLICE AND FIRE GAMES

Peter Julian, MP (Burnaby-New Westminster) and Bill Siksay (Burnaby-Douglas) welcomed the late decision of the Conservative government to fund the 2009 World Police & Fire Games being held in Burnaby, BC this summer. The funding comes as a result of pressure from firefighters, police officers and games organizers, in addition to strong support from the NDP in the House of Commons. The funding will be similar to the 1.7 million that Quebec received when they previously hosted the WPFG.
“This decision was influenced by the determination and fortitude of the firefighters, police officers and games organizers to put pressure on the government for fair and equal treatment”, said Julian. “Two years ago, the Conservative government should have done the right thing and stated unequivocally that they would fund the WPFG in Burnaby”.
Bill Siksay echoed Julian’s comments. “The Conservatives showed a complete lack of respect for firefighters, police officers and customs and correction officers. With less than four months to go before the start of the games, it’s about time that they finally did the right thing”, said Siksay.
The World Police and Fire Games will be held at various venues in BC from July 31-August 9, 2009. Congratulations to the games organizers and participants on achieving funding for this worthwhile event.
