NEWS ~ MAKE LIFE MORE AFFORDABLE: NDP

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ~ July 30, 2013

COURTENAY – While Conservatives continue to focus on helping their insider friends, New Democrats have launched a plan to make life more affordable — with practical solutions to reduce credit card rates, bank fees and predatory payday loan practices.

“Household debt has reached record levels under the Conservatives. And beating that trap is almost impossible when you’re living paycheque-to-paycheque and getting nickel-and-dimed everywhere you turn,” said NDP MP Peter Julian (Burnaby-New Westminster). “New Democrats think Canadians deserve a break—that’s why we’re putting forward practical ideas to take some of the pressure off of household budgets.”

The NDP plan includes measures to ban “pay-to-pay” billing costs, widen access to low-rate credit cards, cap unfair ATM fees, and end payday lenders’ exploitation of vulnerable Canadians.

Today’s press conference was the BC launch of the NDP’s affordability campaign, which features a dedicated website (ndp.ca/affordable) and community outreach components.
