JULIAN’S MOTION TO ELIMINATE OAS AND GIS TO SERIAL KILLERS

OTTAWA – Peter Julian, MP (Burnaby-New Westminster), today tabled a Private Member’s motion, M-507 in Parliament that would prohibit pension payments to serial killers.

Currently, when they reach age 65, inmates receive up to $1,169 a month in Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) payments.

Renowned criminal and mass murderer Clifford Olson is collecting those benefits. Olson, who was imprisoned in 1982 confessed to the brutal and sadistic murders of 11 children and youth.

“We all remember in the Lower Mainland when the horrific Olson murders where uncovered and this changed the face of British Colombia forever”, said Julian. “This motion is a first step towards what I hope will end inappropriate pension payments to serial murderers.”

Julian’s motion would require that all pension benefits withdrawn from serial killers be allocated to programs compensating the victims of crime.

Motion 507 reads as follows: “That, in the opinion of the House, the government should prohibit the payment of Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement payments to individuals serving life sentences for multiple murders, except where the individual is released from prison, and allocate the proceeds to a Victims Compensation Program administered by the provinces.”
