A politician, an advocate and a family man will be roasted and toasted by his colleagues and peers next week.

The Sault Ste. Marie NDP Federal Riding Association will roast former MP and former MPP Tony Martin at the Art Gallery of Algoma on May 17.

The event, open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. and include about an hour of light stories and memories to honour Martin.

The event will see a parade of orange visit the community, including MPs Dennis Bevington (Western Arctic), Peter Julian (Burnaby New-Westminister), Charlie Angus (Timmins-James Bay), Claude Gravelle (Nickle Belt), Joe Comartin (Windsor-Tecumseh) and Alex Atamanenko (B. C. Southern Interior).

The MPs will roast Martin and then be on hand to meet and greet guests.

Riding association president Jim Agnew said the event will be a celebration that includes the community.

"All are welcome to attend. There are no tickets. People just have to show up," he said.

During the last federal election, the late NDP leader Jack Layton led the party to become the official Opposition.

Since that time, Layton died and new leader Tom Mulcair was elected to the top post.

Agnew, who has known Martin for more than two decades, said a lot of familiar faces will be at the event.

"Tony is known for a lot of things and he's known for his tireless campaign to end poverty," Agnew said.

He said it's expected that the event will include a lot of jokes about Martin.
