Context : Questions and Comments
Mr. Peter Julian (Burnaby—New Westminster, NDP): Mr. Speaker, the member for Mississauga South called this a charade. He is absolutely right.
The problem here is that we have Liberals supporting this Conservative attempt to completely run roughshod over every democratic principle we have had in Parliament. Parliament, dating back centuries, was established in order that there would not be the kind of taxation that these Conservatives are bringing in without the types of public hearings and representation and democratic votes, and checks and balances and procedures that these Conservatives are destroyed with this closure motion.
My question is very simple, why are the Liberals supporting this Conservative attempt to crush the opposition that comes from nearly half the country, the 74% of Ontarians and the 83% of British Columbians who oppose this massive tax shift for big corporations from ordinary families who are going to be paying $500 to $2,000 more a year? Why are they supporting this?
