IN THE HOUSE ~ Private Member's Business ~ Presenting petitions ~ the issue of the deportation order of Jose Figueroa
June 17th, 2010 - 4:00am
40th Parliament, 3rd Session
Context : Presenting Petitions
Mr. Peter Julian (Burnaby—New Westminster, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I am tabling today a petition that has been signed by several dozen Canadians from the West from Surrey, Burnaby and Vancouver, British Columbia, but also from Eastern Canada; Toronto, Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec. All of them are appealing to the Government of Canada to look again at the issue of the deportation order of Jose Figueroa.
Mr. Figueroa was a resident of El Salvador. He moved to Canada to escape a brutal right-wing military regime and he was involved politically with the FMLN, now the democratically elected and legitimate government of El Salvador. Inexplicably the government is trying to deport him based on labelling the FMLN, the governing party in El Salvador, as a subversive organization.
These many petitioners from across Canada beg the government to reconsider this untenable position.
