October 21st, 2009 - 6:24pm
40th Parliament, 2nd Session
Mr. Peter Julian (Burnaby—New Westminster, NDP): Mr. Speaker, the arrival of Tamil refugees on our shores in British Columbia gives even more importance to the following petition that is signed by almost 200 residents of the areas of Vancouver and Burnaby, in British Columbia.
These petitioners call on the Government of Canada to use every diplomatic means at its disposal to seek an immediate end to the violence that is happening in Sri Lanka, to respect the human rights of the civilian Tamil population, to end the embargo on food, medicine and other essential items, to restore unequivocal freedom of the press and freedom of movement for the UN and international aid organizations throughout the whole of Sri Lanka and to begin the process of working toward lasting peace and reconciliation and to see a full respect of human rights of all Sri Lankans.
These residents of Vancouver are very concerned about the situation in Sri Lanka and the human rights violations that are taking place against the Tamil population. That is why I forward this petition today.
