IN THE HOUSE ~ Presenting petitions ~ on the collapse of wild salmon stocks

40th Parliament, 3rd Session

Mr. Peter Julian (Burnaby—New Westminster, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I am tabling today a petition with hundreds of names from the coast of British Columbia: the Pemberton Valley, Surrey, Burnaby, the Seychelles, the Sunshine Coast, Nanaimo, Gabriola Island and the north end of Vancouver Island. These are all British Columbians who are asking the Government of Canada to move.

Given the collapse of the sockeye salmon fishery in the Fraser River, given what we have seen in the past with the Atlantic cod stocks which collapsed on the east coast and given the great concerns that have been issued about the lack of concern and neglect of the Pacific fisheries, they are calling on the government to take immediate action, to move to put in place a system that would provide a report on the sockeye salmon fisheries collapse in the Fraser River, British Columbia, within six months.

This is yet another situation where hundreds of British Columbians are asking the government to take action on the collapse of the sockeye salmon fishery.
