IN THE HOUSE ~ JULIAN ADVOCATES RESTITUTION FOR CRIME VICTIMS
April 29th, 2009 - 4:00am
OTTAWA – NDP MP Peter Julian (Burnaby-New Westminster) re-introduced a Private Member’s Bill today which would amend the Criminal Code so that compensation in certain cases is immediately awarded to victims of crime.
“It`s high time that the Criminal Code recognized the rights of victims for rapid and fair compensation, rather than simply punishing criminals” Julian said “The purpose of my bill is to accelerate this judicial process.”
Bill C-372, which amends section 738.1 of the Criminal Code, removes the onerous and lengthy civil court process from the victims by ensuring direction is provided to judges, rather than leaving it as an option as the current law allows for. The crimes targeted by this bill range from property destruction, accidents, physical harm and fraud.
“While we will continue to fight to ensure that crimes are prevented, my Bill aims to help the most vulnerable of our society when crimes are committed against them,” Julian said.
