Dear Constituents,

I am writing in response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti and to express my profound sadness at the terrible loss of life and the enormous human tragedy that is unfolding. The overwhelming infrastructure destruction means Haitians face a desperate shortage of the most basic human needs, including food and potable drinking water.

Friends and relatives in Canada seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in the affected area should contact Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada at 1-800-387-3124.

Already my office is receiving calls and emails from citizens in Burnaby-New Westminster who want to help. I am passing along contact information for those of you who want to contribute to the relief effort and to pledge whatever you can to help ease the unimaginable suffering in Haiti.

The following is a list of some of the national organizations that are accepting donations:

•The Canadian federal government has announced that it will match contributions made made between January 12 and February 12 by individuals (to a maximum of $100,000 per single donation) to eligible Canadian charitable organizations in support of humanitarian and recovery efforts in response to the earthquake, up to a total of $50 million. The money contributed would be managed through the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, run by the Canadian International Development Agency.

The donations must meet the following requirements:
• Made by an individual Canadian.
• Made to a registered Canadian charitable organization that is receiving donations in response to the Jan. 12 Haiti earthquake.
• Specifically earmarked by such organizations for the purpose of responding to the earthquake.
• Made between Jan. 12 and Feb. 12, 2010.
