IN THE HOUSE ~ SAVE OUR WILD SALMON / AGIR DÈS MAINTENANT POUR SAUVER NOS SAUMONS SAUVAGES

WINNING THE JUDICIAL INQUIRY FOR THE SALMON CRISIS IS A GREAT FIRST STEP TO SAVING OUR WILD SALMON

Dear friends,

Thank you for your exceptional participation in our campaign to pressure the Conservative government to launch an independent judicial inquiry into the wild salmon crisis in the Fraser River. In just a few weeks my office received thousands of signatures to the petition calling for the inquiry into the collapse of wild salmon stocks, which we presented to Parliament. Petitions are still flowing in.

Success could not have been possible without your support and the tireless efforts of Alexandra Morton of the Raincoast Research Society and other activists and scientists. Governments are known to bend under public pressure, and the current minority government is no different, in fact minority governments give us a unique opportunity to reflect the will of the majority. Our efforts through many press conferences, massive letters and petitions, and rallies forced the government to concede and launch a judicial inquiry under Judge Cohen to address the wild salmon crisis.

However, the launch of the judicial inquiry is only phase one of this important battle; there are issues that can be addressed now, such as the destruction of habitat, sea lice infestation, predation and bacterial and viral epidemic. This is not an opportunity for the government to sit on its hands for the next two years until the final report is submitted. This is why I have launched a new petition (attached or download here) that demands that the government take action against the aforementioned issues.

As you may know, Fin Donnelly has become our new NDP Fisheries critic. Fin was elected in the recent by-election in New Westminster-Coquitlam and Port Moody. He is taking over the salmon file and replacing Peter Stoffer MP for Sackville–Eastern Shore, who is now the associate Fisheries critic for the East Coast.

Finn brings tremendous strength to our fight for the protection of our wild Salmon resources, as he has worked extensively in the Fraser River community. But of course, I will l remain very active and work closely with Fin on this issue.

Please take a look at the new petition (please scroll down for new petitions) and feel free to circulate it. It is important to present these petitions regularly in the House to help keep the issue at the forefront and hold the federal government accountable in spite of the shameful prorogation of Parliament.

Thank you once again for your continued supportin this campaign.
Thank you for your support of our wild salmon!

Peter Julian, MP (Burnaby-New Westminster)
