NEWS ~ New Democrats support Guelph's Green Energy Plan

“Guelph’s Community Energy Initiative shows it’s possible to provide for the energy needs of a community and ensure its sustainability, said NDP Natural Resources critic Peter Julian (Burnaby—New Westminster).

“By encouraging better co-ordination between all levels of government and the renewable energy sector, projects like the Community Energy Initiative can help build a more sustainable Canada, said deputy Natural Resources critic Jamie Nicholls (Vaudreuil—Soulanges).

As part of their work on the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources, the MPs were in Guelph to learn more about the city’s commitment to energy sustainability.

“As New Democrats, we’re proud to support Guelph’s efforts to make the city’s energy supply cleaner and greener, said Laurin Liu (Rivière-des-Mille-Îles). “We know that Canada can and must focus on sustainable energy and resource development to guarantee a liveable future for the next generation.

While in Guelph, the MPs met with officials at City Hall, the Eastview Landfill Gas Capture and Generation Facility, Guelph Hydro and the Waste Innovation Resource Centre.

“It’s good to see for ourselves just how progressive the City of Guelph is in its commitment to a clean, efficient and sustainable community energy plan. Our NDP team wants to build this type of approach into the heart of the recommendations coming out of the energy and innovation study we are doing in Parliament, said Mining critic Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt).
