NEWS ~ Budget doesn't deliver results for Lower Mainland

“I’m disappointed by the Conservatives’ choice to implement an austerity budget that will not get us out of these tough economic times or help ease exorbitant costs of living in the Lower Mainland, said Stewart.

The Conservatives took no action to reverse reckless cuts to healthcare, pensions, and EI. This budget slashes $4.7 billion over four years in federal infrastructure funding, and provides no new money for education and training.

“This budget continues measures that attack BC – cuts in services, EI, environmental emergencies, coast guard protection and in many other areas, said Julian.

The NDP also reminded that last year, Conservatives predicted economic growth that never came – overestimating growth figures by over 35% and failing to contain the current account deficit – which has now reached $67 billion.

“Our region faces serious challenges like inadequate transit infrastructure and a shortage of affordable housing, said Donnelly. “Unfortunately, this budget does nothing to meet the needs and values of our communities.
